South Pensylvania Railroad Aerial Photos 1937-1939 aerial photos showing the remains and SPRR survey alignments before the Pennsylvania Turnpike was built. Laurel Hill Tunnel Alignments. ![]() Above: If there was any doubt that the Pennsylvania Turnpike destroyed the east portal of the Laurel Hill Tunnel but utilized the west portal then here it is. Look close to the two white lines above the mountain. The one farther north is the Pennsylvania Turnpike cut and the less ovious cut to the south is the original South Pennsylvania Railroad cut of the 1880's. Notice how they meet at the west end but a clear space between the east end is seen. Atop the mountain are three stone monuments (bottom left) built by the railroad as the line of sight cut and as an added bonus a stone quarry (bottom right) was discovered with over one hundred cut stones still waiting to be draged down to the tunnel portals. ![]() Above left: The stone piller just inside the woods was built by the railroad to be used as focal points to lay out their alignment above the mountain ridge. I am standing on the Pennsylvania Turnpike cut. Above right: As an added bonus while looking for the monuments Sue discovered this stone quarry just to the west of the monument in the left photo.
